Fruit, glorious fruit

In the past year, I have somehow developed a pronounced allergy to a number of fruits -- apples, cherries, plums, peaches, nectarines, and most recently, figs. This is extremely frustrating, because they still all taste wonderful. But within moments of eating even a single cherry, my mouth begins to itch and burn, and doesn't stop for around 20 minutes.

On the other hand, I'm not allergic to mangoes, kiwi fruits, avocadoes or bananas, and only a tiny bit to melon. Berries seem ok, as do citrus fruits. Also, cooking the fruit seems to prevent the reaction, at least for apples.

So, what do the problem fruits have in common not shared with the ok fruits?

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
